Vento is a motorcycle riding risk app. It looks at wind, rain, temperature, visibility and possible ice, and tells you how the conditions stand before you ride.

Common questions

Do I need a weather API key?

No. Earlier versions asked riders to create an OpenWeather account and paste an API key into Settings. That is gone. Install the app, open it, and weather loads on its own.

If you set up a key in an older version, it is still on your device and Vento has not sent it anywhere. You can ignore it.

Weather is not loading

Work through these in order:

1. Check your internet connection.
2. Make sure location permission is granted, or pick a location by name in the route planner.
3. If Vento says the weather service is unavailable, the problem is on our side, not yours. Try again in a few minutes.
4. Close the app fully and reopen it.

Vento shows the age of the data it is using. If you see a reading marked as older, that is deliberate: showing you slightly stale data with a clear label is more useful than showing you nothing.

Location permission

Vento uses your location to work out the riding risk where you are. It only asks for location while the app is open, and it never tracks you in the background.

iOS: Settings → Vento → Location → While Using the App

Android: Settings → Apps → Vento → Permissions → Location → Allow only while using the app

If you would rather not grant location access, you can still search for a place by name in the route planner.

Why does the risk level look higher than I expected?

Vento weighs several conditions together, so a level can rise from a combination that no single reading explains. Cold plus damp air near freezing, for example, raises the level for possible ice even when nothing is falling from the sky.

Vento is deliberately cautious in that direction. It would rather tell you to look twice than tell you a road is fine.

Notifications

Vento can send a morning reminder to check conditions. Notifications are generated on your device; nothing is pushed from a server.

Turn them on or off in Settings, and control them at the system level in your device's notification settings.

Route planning

When you plan a route, Vento estimates when you will reach each point along the way and checks the weather for that time, not for right now. Weather that is clear when you set off may not be clear when you arrive.

Route analysis follows a direct line between your points, so it is a guide rather than a turn-by-turn forecast.

I supported the app but the badge is missing

Supporter status is stored on the device where you made the purchase. It does not follow you to a new phone, because Vento has no accounts to tie it to.

If a purchase went through and no badge appeared on the same device, write in with the date and the store receipt and we will sort it out.

Can I support more than once?

Yes. The support options are one-off tips and can be repeated as often as you like. Nothing in the app is locked behind them.

Reporting a problem with the risk levels

If Vento told you conditions were fine and the road said otherwise, that is the most valuable message you can send. Include the place, the date and roughly the time, and what you actually rode into.

Feedback like this is what the thresholds get corrected against.

Safety

Vento provides informational guidance based on weather data. It does not guarantee safety and cannot see the road.

Always use your own judgment, check real conditions, wear proper gear and follow local traffic laws.
