Vento is a motorcycle riding risk guidance app. It helps riders understand weather-related riding risk based on conditions such as wind, rain, visibility, temperature, and possible ice risk.
Vento does not require an account, login, cloud sync, or advertising profile. App settings and preferences stay on your device.
Information We Collect
Vento does not collect personal account information because the app does not use accounts or user profiles.
The app uses the following information to provide its core features:
- Approximate location coordinates
- Weather data
- A random installation identifier
- Locally stored app settings
- Optional purchase/support status
Location Data
Vento uses your location to calculate weather-based riding risk for your current area or selected route.
Location data is used for app functionality only. It is not used for advertising, profiling, or tracking.
When weather information is requested, approximate coordinates are sent to the Vento weather service (described below) in order to retrieve local weather conditions. Before coordinates leave your device they are handled at reduced precision, and the weather service rounds them further to a grid of roughly five kilometres. Vento does not use or transmit precise, street-level position.
Vento requests location access only while the app is in use. It does not track your location in the background.
The Vento Weather Service
Vento operates a weather request service at api.ventoride.com, hosted on Cloudflare Workers. The app sends its weather requests to this service, which forwards them to the weather data provider and returns the result.
This service exists so that riders do not need to obtain and enter their own weather API key.
What the service receives:
- Rounded approximate coordinates, or a searched place name
- A random installation identifier, used to apply fair-use request limits
What the service does not do:
- It does not log coordinates or searched place names
- It does not create user accounts or profiles
- It does not link requests to a person, a device identifier, or an advertising identifier
- It does not store request history
Weather responses are cached briefly by geographic grid cell so that riders in the same area share a single upstream request. This cache holds weather data only; it is not tied to any user.
Requests are transmitted over HTTPS.
Installation Identifier
When you first open Vento, the app generates a random identifier and stores it on your device. This identifier is sent with weather requests so that the service can apply fair-use limits.
This identifier is not a device identifier, hardware identifier, or advertising identifier. It is not linked to your name, email, account, or any other personal information. If you uninstall and reinstall the app, a new identifier is generated and the previous one cannot be connected to it.
Weather Data and OpenWeather
Vento retrieves weather information such as wind, temperature, precipitation, visibility and forecast data from OpenWeather.
Requests reach OpenWeather through the Vento weather service. OpenWeather receives the rounded coordinates or searched place name required to answer the request. It does not receive your installation identifier.
Vento does not control OpenWeather's privacy practices. You can review OpenWeather's own privacy policy on their website.
Optional API Key
Earlier versions of Vento asked riders to enter their own OpenWeather API key. This is no longer required.
The app retains the ability to use a personal API key as a fallback if the Vento weather service is unavailable. If a key was previously saved on your device, it remains stored locally on your device only. Vento's servers never receive, store, or transmit your personal API key.
Local Storage
Vento uses local device storage to save app preferences and settings, such as:
- Selected language
- Selected motorcycle type
- Saved and recent locations
- Notification preferences
- Supporter status
- Installation identifier
- A personal weather API key, if one was previously entered
This information is stored on your device and is not synced to a Vento cloud account.
Purchases and RevenueCat
Vento offers optional in-app support purchases. These purchases are voluntary and do not unlock core safety features.
Vento uses RevenueCat to manage purchase status and supporter entitlement information. RevenueCat may process purchase-related information necessary to validate and manage in-app purchases.
Vento does not use purchase information for advertising or tracking.
Notifications
Vento may send local notifications, such as a daily riding risk reminder, if you enable notifications.
Notifications are generated on your device. Notification preferences are controlled by you and can be changed in the app settings or in your device settings.
No Advertising or Tracking
Vento does not show ads.
Vento does not track users across apps or websites.
Vento does not sell personal data.
Vento does not include analytics or telemetry software.
Data Retention
Locally stored settings remain on your device until you change them, clear app data, or uninstall the app.
The Vento weather service does not retain request data. Cached weather responses are held briefly and expire automatically; they contain weather information only.
Purchase-related information may be retained by Apple, Google and RevenueCat as required to manage in-app purchases.
Children's Privacy
Vento is not designed for children. The app does not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Third-Party Services
Vento uses the following third-party services:
- Cloudflare — hosting for the Vento weather service
- OpenWeather — weather data
- RevenueCat — optional in-app purchase management
- Apple App Store and Google Play — app distribution and in-app purchases
Each third-party service may process data according to its own privacy policy.
Security
Vento is designed to minimise data collection and to store app data locally on your device. Requests to the Vento weather service are transmitted over HTTPS.
No method of electronic storage or transmission is completely secure. Users should avoid entering sensitive information inside the app.
Safety Disclaimer
Vento provides informational riding risk guidance based on weather and route conditions. It does not guarantee safety.
Always use your own judgment, check real-world conditions, wear proper safety equipment, and follow local traffic laws.
